Contrary to the name, Wine Gums don't actually have any wine in them! There are two stories - both of questionable origin - about the name. The first one is that after hearing a sermon on the virtues of abstaining from alcohol, Maynard Jr. decided to market the sweets a an aid to alcohol moderation. Therefore, he named them Wine Gums and labelled them with wine names. The second story is that Maynard junior wanted to market the sweets as so delicious, that they should be appreciated like a fine wine. In 1909, Maynards Wine Gums were introduced to the world from North London, and have been iconic ever since.
